Why Seconds Make Sense for your Home or Business

If you need a textile designed for purpose and aren’t interested in the price tag of some of the truly high technical fabrics- seconds are worth a serious look. Technical textiles designed for uses as vast as parachutes, car seats, military tents, outdoor furniture sling replacement, truck covers, screens, or custom fabrication — fabric seconds are worth a serious look. At Acadian, seconds represent one of our most popular offerings, and for good reason: you get US-made, high-performance coated or uncoated polyesters, nylons and more at a significant discount.
Here’s what fabric seconds are, why they exist, and whether they’re the right fit for your project.
What Are Acadian Seconds?
Fabric rolls that did not meet the strict quality standards required for primary mill customers — but are still structurally sound and highly usable. The defect is often minor or cosmetic, and in many cases can be cut away entirely. Some are over stock or aged.
Manufacturing high-quality textiles requires tight tolerances at every step. When something falls outside those tolerances — even slightly — the material is pulled from the primary supply chain. That’s where we come in.
Common Types of Fabric Defects
Seconds can result from a range of production issues, including:
Color that doesn’t exactly match the standard or a customer’s special request
A dropped yarn in weaving, leaving a small open space
Yarn turning somewhere along the roll
Polyester yarn not properly centered in the PVC coating
Yarn(s) or section left uncoated or coated unevenly
Waves or lines in the selvage area of a roll
In many cases these defects are invisible to the eye or easily worked around. The material can perform the same as first-quality fabric in many applications.
Below are some examples of the seconds we have offered.
The Cost Opportunity
Because seconds require extra handling — cutting around defects, accounting for potential waste — they’re sold at a meaningful discount versus first-quality fabric. Depending on the defect type and your application, the usable yield is often very high.
That cost difference opens up projects that simply wouldn’t be feasible at retail pricing. Custom bags, place mats, umbrellas, outdoor covers, tents, outdoor furniture replacement fabric, and specialty industrial applications are all common uses for our seconds inventory.
Who Are Fabric Seconds Best For?
Seconds work best for buyers who have some flexibility in how they work with the material. Ideal customers include:
Businesses and artisans doing custom hand fabrication, where defects can be identified and worked around during cutting
Designers who can select from our changing inventory of available fabrics, colors, and roll sizes
International manufacturers and fabricators interested in sourcing US-made textiles at competitive pricing
Outdoor furniture repair and reupholstery shops replacing sling chair fabric or patio mesh
Agricultural and industrial buyers needing functional fabrics at lower cost per yard
If your process requires perfectly uniform material from roll to roll — for automated cutting or strict color matching — first-quality fabric is the better choice. But for most fabrication and custom work, seconds deliver strong value.
